Course Description

The objective of this course is to give basic tools used in Natural Language Processing and to show how they are put to use. We pay focus mainly to regular expressions and their relationship with final state automatons, as well as transducers (which are mainly used in morpho-syntactic analysis), and free-context grammars. We will show how these are used in order to construct the analysis of syntactic trees, which will lead to a discussion about computational semantics. The objective is to put into place a minimalistic solution to an NLP problem. In this way, students will have a more enlarged perspective during the coursework of the second semester and why each class could improve such a minimalistic approach.
