Natural Language Processing: Get computers to converse

NLP: AN EXPLODING AND FASCINATING AREA OF SCIENCE, OFFERING MANY CAREER OPPORTUNITIES IN MANY SECTORS SUCH AS INDUSTRY, RESEARCH, EDUCATION...

The goal of NLP (Natural Language Processing) is to produce a computational model which simulates our ability to speak and understand « natural » languages such as English, French or Russian as opposed to artificial languages such as programming or mathematics.

With the proliferation of digital data, there is a massive need for well-trained engineers and researchers able to exploit this data for commercial (e-commerce, recommendation systems, automatic summarization, multilingual translation, etc) and socio-political (e-learning, opinion mining, behavioral prediction, etc.) purposes.

Worldwide, start-ups, small firms with strong R&D profiles and large companies (e.g., in France, Airbus, Thales, EDF, Orange) are looking for scientists and engineers who can contribute to the development of systems capable of managing and exploiting textual data (web pages, tweets, emails, blogs, messages on social networks, institutional texts, debates from the European Parliament, digital archives and books, …).

MSc Degree in Natural Language Processing by IDMC

AT THE CROSSROADS OF COMPUTER SCIENCE, MATHEMATICS, LINGUISTICS AND ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE
Studying NLP is studying linguistics (what are the rules defining a language ?), computer science (How to program models which can convert data into text or vice versa, or which can interpret the content of a text ?) and formal approaches (probability theory, statistics).

NLP has many applications: machine translation, human-machine dialogue, summarization, opinion detection (e.g. is the author of a text for or against Brexit ?), computer aided language learning (e.g., automatic generation of exercices for language learning), text simplification to facilitate access to content etc.

NLP is a strongly expanding field which addresses fascinating scientific challenges (how to model natural language ?) and offers a wide range of career opportunities in research, teaching and industry.

Erasmus Mundus opportunities

The University of Lorraine participates in two Erasmus Mundus Masters funded by the European Union : the Erasmus Mundus Master Language and Communication Technology (LCT) and the Erasmus Mundus Master EMLex.

In these Masters, the students, selected at the European level, study within a international consortium of 8 universities, the first year in one of the universities (for instance Nancy) and the second one in another (for instance, Malta, Prague or Saarbrücken).

The MSc degree in NLP is the Nancy part of the Erasmus Mundus Master Language and Communication Technology.

During the second year of the Master, the students of both tracks (Nancy NLP and LCT) attend the same classes taught in English.
